Straight from Paramount studios in Los Angeles, we got a chance to sit down with Chrishan. We were able to get the Scoop on him as he takes a break from his 9-hour recording session. He lets us in on some of his experiences, favorite brands, and how he gets his grind on.
SMAG: What are some roadblocks you have had so far? Chrishan: When it comes to radio play, especially in Minnesota. Minnesota is a small music market but it’s hard to break in Minnesota. You gotta have connections to break in Minnesota and we were able to make those connections and that has helped me to move the project and grow the buzz.
SMAG: What do you bring to the table as an artist? Chrishan: Creativity, out of the box, like I’ll take an everyday catch phrase and flip it to something else that nobody would think of. I like to be different and unique but have it be something that people can relate to. I just put my spin on things and make it hot.
SMAG: Who would you like to work with? Chrishan: I feel like I can hold myself down on any track with any artist from The Dream to Nelly, the New boyz just to name a few. I feel like I can get on a track with anybody from a new up and coming act to a solidified act. There’s no pressure at all. I’m open to working with artists that make good music.
SMAG: What are some of your favorite brands and clothes that you wear? Chrishan: I’m in to Louis Vuitton; I just copped the new Louie x Kanye joints in all black. I’m digging those for right now. I’m into Gucci too
So more of the high-end stuff…
Chrishan: Naw I can flex either way. Like right now I am rocking some American Eagle. Like 75% of my clothes is American eagle just because I love their brand. I love what they stand for. They are like right in the center. It’s not like Abercrombie & Fitch but it’s not Target either you know.
SMAG: How were you able to build your buzz? Chrishan: My team and I basically connected with people who came to Minnesota on a specific purpose of business. Like I was talking to dudes who came to Minnesota and who had connects from places other than Minnesota. I wasn’t just running around trying to promote myself to the people who were already in Minnesota, I was promoting to people who were taking a look and passing by so they can take my sound with them. Then we started hearing our stuff in neighboring towns like Kansas City, Iowa. You would never think of those cities as big music destinations but they helped us grow our fan base and buzz.
SMAG: When was one of the first times you felt successful with your music? Chrishan: It was a showcase for the local radio station. It had to be my first performance for a big crowd. The day before Valentine’s Day last year and my team and I got off the stage and people were swarming us hugging us like we were celebrities. The vibe was just right and we built clout from that performance. Know everybody from downtown knows my name and all the radio dj’s know who I am. It was cool. My team and I have opened up for Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy, Day 26 and a whole bunch of others.
SMAG: What kind of music do you make? Chrishan: I make music for everybody. I tell the truth the uncut truth. All types of genres and all types of age groups can relate to what I’m saying. I’m more into RnB, soul, and a dash of pop. I write on real life experiences, so every song on my album is about something that has actually happened to me. I produce to so ya’ll listen out for the production on the tracks. That is also me.
SMAG: Who would you say your sound fits or whom would you like to write for?
Chrishan: Pleasure P, Chris Brown, Trey Songz you know artists who are in the same range. That RnB, pop, urban crossover genre.
SMAG: What is unique to your grind? Chrishan: Dedication. I have been doing this for a long time, just grinding and making connections. I feel like I am either going to make it as a singer, producer or a songwriter. It’s going to happen for me it’s inevitable!
SMAG: How long have you been into music? Chrishan: I have been into music since I was like 3 years old. I started writing at 6 and producing music at the age of ten. My dad had me practicing since I was young. I used to practice singing songs from Usher, Tevin Campbell, Chico Debarge and the Jacksons things like that.
SMAG: As we close any shout outs?
Chrishan: Yea I wanna thank all those that believed in me and stuck by me. I aint going nowhere. I just started. Things are about to get a lot crazier, there’s a lot more to look forward too. Shout out to Sound Sick that’s the crew J. Watts , K. City, and Roy Star. We here now.
